Could the future of architecture lie in our reconnection with nature? This year, the Türkiye Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale seeks answers to this very question through the thought-provoking exhibition titled “The Grounded”
Coordinated by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) and curated by Ceren Erdem and Bilge Kalfa, The Grounded treats soil not merely as a building material, but as a way of thinking — a medium for learning, reflecting, and envisioning new possibilities.
Thinking with Soil: An Interactive Architectural Experience
The Grounded invites visitors to feel, sense, and reconnect with the earth. As an interactive installation, the exhibition offers an inspiring vision for sustainable, resilient, and ecologically harmonious ways of building and living.
Through this work, the curators propose a bold and timely idea: Soil is not just a surface we stand on — it is a shared ground from which we can build the future.
A Collective Creation: Contributors & Collaborators
The Grounded is the result of a rich collective effort. Individual contributors include Hüseyin Aksoy, Michael Akstaller, E. Füsun Alioğlu & Senem Akçay, Ali Mahmut Demirel, Sinem Dişli, Yelda Gin, Ali Miharbi, Özgül Öztürk, Serkan Taycan, and Orkan Telhan.
Team contributors feature Bire-Pan, Common Action Walls, Herkes İçin Mimarlık & Poçolana Works, Mono Earth, Ozruh, Rec II, ReYard House, Solidified, and Yalın Mimarlık, all of whom enrich the exhibition with diverse perspectives and practices.
See You in Venice on May 10!
Recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious architectural events, the Venice Architecture Biennale opens its doors on May 10, 2025, and will run until November 23.
At Stoneline, we are proud to be part of this powerful narrative — one where architecture reunites with nature and where the voice of the earth becomes part of the design.
Stoneline hosted MEF University Faculty of Architecture students in its showroom in an event organised to transfer its expertise in natural stone to future generations. This special visit offered an important opportunity for students to reinforce their sectoral knowledge and gain in-depth knowledge about natural stones.
Journey of Natural Stones: From Rock to Structure
In the first part of the visit, Stoneline Geological Engineer Kadir Akyıldırım made a special comprehensive presentation to the students. In the presentation; natural stone types, the production process from the extraction of stones to processing, and details were explained in all stages. While the students had the opportunity to get to know many types of natural stones from marble to travertine, granite to limestone, they were equipped with critical information such as how these stones are used in different structures and which technical details should be taken into consideration.
Showroom Tour: Carefully Selected Stones from Turkey and the World
Following the training, the students took a comprehensive tour of Stoneline’s impressive showroom. In this section, natural stone samples extracted from all over Turkey and high quality stones imported from different parts of the world were closely examined. Students had the opportunity to see and touch the surface textures.
A Meeting Inspiring Young Architects
For the students, this meeting has become an inspiring experience where they can not only gain technical knowledge but also have direct contact with the sector and shape their interests. As Stoneline, we are happy to bring young architecture candidates together with the subtleties of the natural stone world.

A Guide to Selecting the Ideal Variety for Your Design Needs
With its stunning colors, durability, and versatility, quartzite is a popular choice for countertops and surfaces – but how do you choose the right type for your project?
Quartzite is a natural stone that has gained immense popularity in recent years due to its unique characteristics and benefits. It is a metamorphic rock that is formed when sandstone is subjected to high pressure and heat, resulting in a dense and durable material. Quartzite is available in a wide range of colors, including white, gray, beige, blue, green, pink, red, and multicolor varieties, making it a versatile option for various design needs.
However, with so many options available, selecting the right type of quartzite can be overwhelming. In this article, we will provide a comprehensive guide to help you choose the perfect quartzite for your design needs.
Understanding Quartzite Varieties
Quartzite comes in a wide range of colors, each with its unique characteristics and patterns. Some popular white and light quartzite options include Taj Mahal, White Macaubas, and Mont Blanc. For gray tones, consider White Macaubas, Sea Pearl, or Mercury Gray quartzite. Blue quartzite varieties include Azul Macaubas, Blue Lagoon, and Azurra Bay. Green quartzite options include Emerald Quartzite Dark and Verde Karzai.
If you’re looking for a marble-like look, Calacatta Macaubas and Calacatta Lux quartzite mimic marble veining. Exotic multicolor quartzites include Fusion, Botticelli, and Galapagos. These unique varieties can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space.
Considerations for Choosing the Right Quartzite
When selecting a quartzite, there are several factors to consider. One of the most important considerations is the level of movement or veining desired. Some quartzites have subtle patterns, while others are more dramatic. If you prefer a subtle look, consider a quartzite with minimal veining. However, if you want to make a statement, a quartzite with bold veining can be a great option.
Another important consideration is durability and hardness. Harder, more crystalline quartzites like Taj Mahal are extremely durable but can be challenging to fabricate. Softer, more grainy quartzites may require more frequent sealing but are easier to work with.
The application of the quartzite is also an important consideration. For high-traffic areas like kitchens, choose a harder, more durable quartzite variety. For a luxurious bathroom, consider a quartzite with elegant veining like Calacatta Macaubas. Outdoor applications require a UV-resistant quartzite that can withstand the elements.
Popular Quartzite Options for Different Design Styles
Quartzite can be paired with various design styles to create a unique and elegant look. For a timeless and neutral look, opt for white, beige, or light gray quartzites. These colors are versatile and can complement any design style.
For a bold and colorful look, consider exotic multicolor quartzites like Fusion, Botticelli, and Galapagos. These unique varieties can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space.
If you’re looking for a marble-like look, Calacatta Macaubas and Calacatta Lux quartzite mimic marble veining. These quartzites are perfect for creating a luxurious and elegant look.
Trending Quartzite Colors for 2025
According to recent trends, white, gray, and blue tones are popular quartzite colors for 2025. These colors are versatile and can complement any design style. For a timeless look, opt for neutral quartzite colors like white, beige, or light gray.
Factors to Consider When Selecting a Quartzite
When selecting a quartzite, there are several factors to consider. One of the most important factors is translucency. Some quartzites can be backlit for dramatic effect, adding an extra layer of elegance to any space.
Another important factor is the finish of the quartzite. Polished, honed, and leathered finishes are available, each with its unique characteristics. Match the quartzite’s finish to your design preferences to create a cohesive look.
Finally, it’s essential to view full slabs in person when possible. Colors and patterns can vary significantly, and seeing the quartzite up close can help you make a more informed decision.
Conclusion
Choosing the perfect quartzite can be overwhelming, but by considering the factors mentioned above, you can make an informed decision. Remember to consider the level of movement or veining desired, durability and hardness, application, and design style.
Quartzite is a versatile and elegant natural stone that can add a touch of sophistication to any space. With its unique characteristics and benefits, it’s no wonder why quartzite is a popular choice for countertops and surfaces.

The theme of the competition is to design a paladian-style terrazzo composition. The theme is open-ended.
What is Palezzo?
We have named our artisanal paladian-terrazzo creations “Palezzo.” Taking a new approach to paladian flooring, which was fashionable in Europe and worldwide in the 1960s, we primarily use waste stones. We produce either prefabricated slabs or on-site poured terrazzo.
In on-site pouring, stones are placed on the ground, an epoxy-based mixture is poured over them, and the surface is polished. This type of application allows up to 40 m² of seamless coverage. If the terrazzo application is for a wall covering or casting is not feasible on-site, stones are arranged in a mold, the mixture is poured over them, and slabs are produced. The slabs are then cut to size and installed like tiles.
The maximum mold (slab) size is 120×240 cm.
Components of Palezzo:
Epoxy-based mixture: Known as epoxy matrix, this mixture determines the background color of Palezzo and can be selected from any color chart (RAL, NCS, etc.).
Aggregate: These are small crushed stones, ranging in size from 0.7 mm to a maximum of 12 mm. The selection of aggregates affects the color perception of the design and should be chosen accordingly.
Stone pieces: These are the main elements forming the composition in paladian-style terrazzo. Depending on the design, the stones may have clean-cut edges or be broken using techniques such as hammering or guillotine cutting.
Objective of the Competition
Organized by Stoneline, this competition aims to create new compositions for our artisanal paladian-style terrazzo collection called Palezzo. Prototypes of the works that make it to the second stage will be produced.
Competition Type and Format
The competition is an idea project competition for students, organized by Stoneline – Palezzo. Participation is free of charge.
Competition Process
Participants are expected to create a new Palezzo composition that has not been previously designed or produced.
Palezzo is offered to architects and designers as a customizable product, allowing them to modify the background color (epoxy matrix), stone colors, and even aggregates. However, the resulting product will be unique. In the second stage, selected designs will be dry-laid by the designers, and the stones will be arranged in molds at our showroom workshop in Ayazağa.
Expectations for Stage 1:
A Palezzo composition design in a 50×50 cm format.
The design should be presented in an A1-sized poster (hand drawing, collage, or digital print).
The 1:1 scale drawing should specify the type, color, size, and shape of the stones, and the composition should be accurately colored.
The epoxy matrix color should be selected and specified with a RAL or NCS code.
Aggregate selection is optional in this stage and can be finalized in the second stage.
Workshop Activities in Stage 2:
Arranging pre-cut or workshop-broken stones into molds (dry-lay process).
Fixing stones in the mold to prevent shifting during casting.
Selecting aggregates (optional; initial selections can be revised).
Determining aggregate ratios to finalize the preparation for casting.
Materials to be Used:
Stone Selection: Participants must select stones from the following list (one or multiple):
Marmara (gray)
Dolomite (white)
Uşak green
Yellow travertine
Beige travertine
Pink travertine
Greige
Salvadori
Lilac
Black Marble
Stone sizes may range from 2-20 cm. If broken stones are used in the design, they will be broken during the workshop, so there may be slight differences from the original design. The main concept must be maintained.
Epoxy Matrix Mixture: The epoxy matrix color chosen by the participant will be prepared in advance (must be selected from the RAL or NCS chart).
Aggregate (small stone pieces) Options:
White: 1-6 mm (1 mm, 1-3 mm, or 3-6 mm)
Red: 1-6 mm (1 mm, 1-3 mm, or 3-6 mm)

We know very well how tiny details make huge differences in projects and it’s our objective to present the best state of stone to all of our customers. For this reason, slab quality control starts with placing the block on the gangsaw.
We carefully monitor all actions from cutting the block to turn it into a slab to make sure that slabs enter the quality control process at their best shape.
The size, thickness, pattern, surface finish, smoothness and many other criteria are checked during quality control which is followed by filling the quality control form. Then we take photos of each slab. In case of stones with frequent pattern variations, we support photos with videos. Then, all photos and videos are shared with the customer. The purpose here is to reflect the status of slabs to the customer – whether a distributor or a project owner. In this way, customers are assured whether slabs will fit to the project and the collection or not.
The slabs that pass quality control (inspection) successfully and approved by the customer are then bundled and dispatched. During loading of the bundles, all actions are again recorded with photos and reported to the customer.
As Stoneline, with our passion for culture and art, we are delighted to once again support the Istanbul Music Festival organized by IKSV. The festival has become a meeting point for art, music, cultural interactions, and sharing, in addition to its days filled with art and music.
As the sponsor of the 51st Istanbul Music Festival, we had the opportunity to connect with art enthusiasts through two special concerts.
Our first concert took place in the impressive atmosphere of the French Palace. Les Vents Français & Éric Le Sage treated us to an unforgettable evening with “French Winds”
Our second concert, the world premiere of “Women Have Waited Long Enough” a three-part composition written by female composers from the Netherlands, Turkey, and Iran,
took place in the magical atmosphere of the Basilica Cistern and became one of the most exciting concerts of the festival.

While stating that they have increased their contributions for education, culture and art several times in recent years, Bayrak also shared their conception of social responsibility in this regard with the following words: “If we want this world to be better, it could only be done through education, culture and art and I believe that a country that progresses in these fields will progress in every field. We support many projects to be in part of the education of children and youth in Turkey. We are also among the supporters of the Istanbul Culture and Arts Foundation and the founders and supporters of AURA-Istanbul Architecture and Urbanism Research Academy. We develop various projects with universities and host exhibitions of students. Now, with the establishing of our publishing house, we aim to contribute to the enrichment of the natural stone culture and literature by publishing in the field of natural stone and to support the field by publishing academic researches that written in this field.”
STONELINE Publications editorial director Gülçin İpek shared the following information about the publishing house: “We have established STONELINE Publications as “a publishing house specializing in natural stones”. We aim to contribute to the fields of architecture, interior architecture, culture, art, design, archeology and geology with the publications we prepare with a focus on natural stone, and to support academic researches that can turn into publications in these fields. ‘Natural Stone Facades’ is the first book of our publishing house. The book, which exemplifies the phases of natural stone from quarry to construction with references from history and contemporary practices, and will guide their correct use, was prepared simultaneously in two languages, German and Turkish. The books we will publish will deal with natural stones sometimes with their technical and sometimes with their cultural extents. Bringing books in different languages into Turkish is also among our goals.”
‘The Natural Stone Facades’ book aims to show the variety of applications of a natural stone as a material and to create a platform for discussion to guide its use in the right place and in the right way. At the same time, it is aimed to ease the process by pointing out the importance of cooperation between the investor (employer), the architect and the stone supplier. This cooperation has a great importance especially in the initial stages of planning.
This book; consists of five main sections covering current design trends and technologies in natural stone facade design, references and basic information from the history of architecture, design methods, a comprehensive and original analysis of built structures and their facades, the adventure of natural stones from block to construction, and main stone types.
Introduction to the Subject and New Trends
In the “Introduction”, Hermann Graser takes the reader on a broad tour of the horizon, from the current advantages of natural stone as a building material to its current applications, from traditional construction techniques to contemporary manufacturing methods. Under this title, the advantages and disadvantages of the main facade construction types are introduced by associating them with the building construction methods, while the use of different construction types together in the same project is explained with examples.
Theory and Fundamentals
Under the title of “Theory and Fundamentals”, Philipp Meuser, by taking the thousands of years of stone as a building material into consideration, he also seeks answer to his question of “Does contemporary architecture need to break its bond with this traditional material?” and draws a conclusion that the bond is should not be broken.
Designs with Natural Stones
Under the title of “Designs with Natural Stones”, Tobias Nöfer; As a continuation of the subject, closely examines the details between the subbasement and the roof eaves, such as molding, lesene and pilaster, column and pillaradornment and surface, corner and joint, both in terms of classical style language and plasticity in shaping.
Constructions and Facades
This section includes projects built in the last 20 years, as well as additional structures, renovations, repairs and reconstructions. The project range, which extends from a two-storey gable roof house to multi-storey residences, includes different typologies such as residences offices, hotels, schools and museums built with a reinforced concrete framed building system. Different facade types such as masonry walls, facade front walls, ventilated stone clad facades or self-supporting solid elements are exemplified in the selected projects. While each project is introduced with its main lines, almost from the urban planning scale to the joint details, with texts, photographs and photograph captions, the relationship between design and material is also examined. In terms of design approaches, the projects are examined by classifying them as projects that have an impressive position in terms of relief effect, emphasis on massiveness, scale and positioning from afar, their original relations with the environment, and the use of light and shadow effect.
Extraction and Processing of Natural Stones and Their Types
In the last part of the book, Graser and Krüger explain the processes of natural stone from quarry to cladding and the main natural stone types with the help of photographs.
The book ends with sample implementation plans. It is written in a language that even non-architect readers can easily understand with the help of texts accompanied by nearly 1,000 photographs and technical detail drawings. Although the book focuses on the use of natural stone on the facade, it also informs the reader in detail about natural stones.
