Stoneline is Proud to Contribute to the Türkiye Pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia

Venice Biennale 19th International Architecture Exhibition

Could the future of architecture lie in our reconnection with nature?
This year, the Türkiye Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale seeks answers to this very question through the thought-provoking exhibition titled “The Grounded”

Coordinated by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) and curated by Ceren Erdem and Bilge Kalfa, The Grounded treats soil not merely as a building material, but as a way of thinking — a medium for learning, reflecting, and envisioning new possibilities.

Thinking with Soil: An Interactive Architectural Experience

The Grounded invites visitors to feel, sense, and reconnect with the earth.
As an interactive installation, the exhibition offers an inspiring vision for sustainable, resilient, and ecologically harmonious ways of building and living.

Through this work, the curators propose a bold and timely idea:
Soil is not just a surface we stand on — it is a shared ground from which we can build the future.

A Collective Creation: Contributors & Collaborators

The Grounded is the result of a rich collective effort.
Individual contributors include Hüseyin Aksoy, Michael Akstaller, E. Füsun Alioğlu & Senem Akçay, Ali Mahmut Demirel, Sinem Dişli, Yelda Gin, Ali Miharbi, Özgül Öztürk, Serkan Taycan, and Orkan Telhan.

Team contributors feature Bire-Pan, Common Action Walls, Herkes İçin Mimarlık & Poçolana Works, Mono Earth, Ozruh, Rec II, ReYard House, Solidified, and Yalın Mimarlık, all of whom enrich the exhibition with diverse perspectives and practices.

See You in Venice on May 10!

Recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious architectural events, the Venice Architecture Biennale opens its doors on May 10, 2025, and will run until November 23.

At Stoneline, we are proud to be part of this powerful narrative — one where architecture reunites with nature and where the voice of the earth becomes part of the design.

Material, Space and Inspiration: Landscape Architects of the Future at Stoneline

Stoneline hosted Medipol University Department of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture students in its showroom to explore the role of natural stone in architecture and landscape design. The visit offered young designer candidates a rich insight into the aesthetic, structural and environmental effects of natural stone.

Design with Natural Stone: Harmony of Function and Aesthetics

Within the scope of the event, Kadir Akyıldırım, Stoneline’s experienced Geological Engineer, gave a detailed presentation on all stages starting from the formation process of natural stone to its extraction, processing and integration into projects.
Students gained comprehensive information about the types of stone used in landscape projects, outdoor durability, ecological compatibility and the criteria to be considered in material selection. This information forms the cornerstones of creating both functional and visually sustainable designs.

Showroom Tour: Face to Face with the Aesthetics of Nature

Following the presentation, the students had a comprehensive tour of the showroom, which contains Stoneline’s rich collection. Turkey’s natural stone richness inspired the students both culturally and aesthetically.
The variety of different surface textures, colour palettes and textures allowed the students to explore the creative possibilities offered by natural stone in landscape architecture.

An Inspiring Experience for Young Designers

While raising awareness about the use of natural materials, this visit also provided students with in-depth information about the material details they may encounter in real projects. As Stoneline, we find these ties with design-oriented departments very valuable; we are happy to introduce young architects and designers to the timeless power of natural stone.

Why was this meeting important?

Palezzo Design Student Pattern Competition

Palezzo student design contest poster, 2 June 2025 deadline.

Competition Theme

The theme of the competition is to design a paladian-style terrazzo composition. The theme is open-ended.

What is Palezzo?

We have named our artisanal paladian-terrazzo creations “Palezzo.” Taking a new approach to paladian flooring, which was fashionable in Europe and worldwide in the 1960s, we primarily use waste stones. We produce either prefabricated slabs or on-site poured terrazzo.

In on-site pouring, stones are placed on the ground, an epoxy-based mixture is poured over them, and the surface is polished. This type of application allows up to 40 m² of seamless coverage. If the terrazzo application is for a wall covering or casting is not feasible on-site, stones are arranged in a mold, the mixture is poured over them, and slabs are produced. The slabs are then cut to size and installed like tiles.

The maximum mold (slab) size is 120×240 cm.

Components of Palezzo:

  • Epoxy-based mixture: Known as epoxy matrix, this mixture determines the background color of Palezzo and can be selected from any color chart (RAL, NCS, etc.).
  • Aggregate: These are small crushed stones, ranging in size from 0.7 mm to a maximum of 12 mm. The selection of aggregates affects the color perception of the design and should be chosen accordingly.
  • Stone pieces: These are the main elements forming the composition in paladian-style terrazzo. Depending on the design, the stones may have clean-cut edges or be broken using techniques such as hammering or guillotine cutting.

Objective of the Competition

Organized by Stoneline, this competition aims to create new compositions for our artisanal paladian-style terrazzo collection called Palezzo. Prototypes of the works that make it to the second stage will be produced.

Competition Type and Format

The competition is an idea project competition for students, organized by Stoneline – Palezzo. Participation is free of charge.

Competition Process

Participants are expected to create a new Palezzo composition that has not been previously designed or produced.

Palezzo is offered to architects and designers as a customizable product, allowing them to modify the background color (epoxy matrix), stone colors, and even aggregates. However, the resulting product will be unique. In the second stage, selected designs will be dry-laid by the designers, and the stones will be arranged in molds at our showroom workshop in Ayazağa.

Expectations for Stage 1:

  • A Palezzo composition design in a 50×50 cm format.
  • The design should be presented in an A1-sized poster (hand drawing, collage, or digital print).
  • The 1:1 scale drawing should specify the type, color, size, and shape of the stones, and the composition should be accurately colored.
  • The epoxy matrix color should be selected and specified with a RAL or NCS code.
  • Aggregate selection is optional in this stage and can be finalized in the second stage.

Workshop Activities in Stage 2:

  • Arranging pre-cut or workshop-broken stones into molds (dry-lay process).
  • Fixing stones in the mold to prevent shifting during casting.
  • Selecting aggregates (optional; initial selections can be revised).
  • Determining aggregate ratios to finalize the preparation for casting.

Materials to be Used:

  1. Stone Selection: Participants must select stones from the following list (one or multiple):
  • Marmara (gray)
  • Dolomite (white)
  • Uşak green
  • Yellow travertine
  • Beige travertine
  • Pink travertine
  • Greige
  • Salvadori
  • Lilac
  • Black Marble

Stone sizes may range from 2-20 cm. If broken stones are used in the design, they will be broken during the workshop, so there may be slight differences from the original design. The main concept must be maintained.

  1. Epoxy Matrix Mixture: The epoxy matrix color chosen by the participant will be prepared in advance (must be selected from the RAL or NCS chart).
  2. Aggregate (small stone pieces) Options:
  • White: 1-6 mm (1 mm, 1-3 mm, or 3-6 mm)
  • Red: 1-6 mm (1 mm, 1-3 mm, or 3-6 mm)
  • Black: 1-4 mm (1 mm or 2-4 mm)
  • Yellow onyx: 1-6 mm (1 mm, 1-3 mm, or 3-6 mm)
  • Green: 1-6 mm (1 mm, 1-3 mm, or 3-6 mm)

If you have any questions, please send them to [email protected].
We wish you success, we look forward to your valuable work.
